The coast and hinterland of Caparica offer the visitor a wealth of natural treasures.
This is a place blessed by a superb climate, and a number of characteristics, which make it a natural habitat for a great diversity of flora and fauna.
The Mata das Dunas and Mata Nacional dos Medos, areas of planting originally designed to arrest the movement of shifting sand from encroaching onto the rich agricultural land of the interior, have given rise to magnificent woods of acacia, pine and juniper, thus creating wonderful areas for leisure and relaxation.
The Arriba Fóssil, a strange and rare formation of sedimentary rock, deposited over a period of many millions of years, is a protected area and home to a variety of birds of prey, including the common Buzzard, the Black Winged Kite and the Galician Owl.
Other important protected areas include the Tagus Estuary and the Arrábida Natural Park, both within easy driving distance.
